Indication
Treatment of severe recalcitrant nodular acne that is unresponsive to conventional therapy including systemic antibiotics. Indicated for severe cystic acne, acne conglobata, and acne at risk of permanent scarring.
Ingredients
- Isotretinoin USP 10mg
Direction
As directed by physician. Typical dosage: 0.5 to 1 mg/kg/day given in two divided doses with food for 15 to 20 weeks. Take capsules with meals to improve absorption. Do not exceed prescribed dose.
Side effects
- Dry skin
- lips
- and mucous membranes (very common)
- Cheilitis (cracked/inflamed lips)
- Nosebleeds (epistaxis)
- Joint and muscle pain (arthralgia
- myalgia)
- Elevated liver enzymes and triglycerides
- Eye dryness and irritation
- Headache
- Skin fragility and increased sun sensitivity
Precautions
- CONTRAINDICATED in pregnancy — causes severe birth defects (teratogenic)
- Women of childbearing age must use effective contraception before
- during
- and 1 month after treatment
- Pregnancy test required before starting treatment
- Do not donate blood during treatment and for 1 month after stopping
- Regular monitoring of liver function and blood lipids required
- Avoid excessive sun exposure and use sunscreen
- Do not take vitamin A supplements concurrently
- May cause mood changes — report any psychiatric symptoms to physician
- Prescription drug — use only under medical supervision
- Keep out of reach of children
